Day 13 - Looking Back

50 people, most who had not met each other before, together for 14 days.  This may seem like an interesting dynamic.  Well, let me say, the dynamic was great.  My name is Ron Van Der Pol, and I had the privilege of coordinating and leading 46 students, our monitor, Dawn Habada, our chaperone, Karen Maduschke, and our bus driver, Bryan Collins on our Belo West Coast Tour.  As I reflect on the last 13 days, I continue to have one thing come to mind; a smooth and genuinely enjoyable trip.  This particular group of students was a curious, respectful, and fun bunch to work with.  My goal as the coordinator of this trip was to give the students a two-week tour of a particularly unique and beautiful part of the United States.  As a native of the West Coast, I enjoyed sharing a variety of the sights, landmarks, and the history of this part of the country.  In our time together, we saw the Arizona desert, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Southern California, Yosemite National Park and the San Francisco Bay Area.  There were simply too many awesome memories to share in one blog post.  I would instead challenge you to ask one of the students who were a part of this trip what they gained from it.  When I introduced myself, and the tour, on the first day, I explained that I wanted our group to work as a team.  Well, looking back our smooth and enjoyable trip was in large part due to the students doing their part as a part of our big team.  It was enjoyable to be the leader of this fine team of students and leaders.  I am thankful that these students took part in this Belo Usa Travel Experience.

WHOO HOO!

Today we shared an amazing last day together walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, venturing out to Alcatraz island by boat, and celebrating our time together with a final dinner and dancing. Many were excited that we've made it this far, others sad to see it end but, one thing is for sure; we had the time of our lives traveling from Phoenix to San Francisco and everywhere in between. We entered this trip as strangers and leave as a family who share dreams, memories, and ambitions. We are Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and the USA, and we have lived the West Coast Trip together. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Thank you Belo USA.

Trip Monitor- Dawn Habada, USA

I wake up and find myself on a beach in the sand
With skyscrapers towering their shadows above.
Cacti and palm trees surround fire hydrants
Where pigeons and lizards dance in the wind.
I lay in the sun that shines on our world and I breathe.
Wherever I go, it’s never too far
From that place where I find myself.

Hey everyone! I'm the last person at the hotel. I'm so lonely. haha
I hope that everyone has safe flights home.
It was a wonderful time with you guys.
I can't believe how close we are in just two weeks.
I would never forget these amazing friends.
Dont you think it's amazing that we all have friendships
all around the world and it will last forever, right?
I don't know how far we are, but distance won't ruin
our friendships. keep in touch!
....untill we meet again :)

Dinner at China Town Restaurant

Today we went to downtown San Francisco. At the beginning we took the famous cable car across town and had a little bit time to go to the mall to go shopping. Most of us bought a lot of stuff, especially the girls. After the sopping tour, we rode our tour bus through the awesome city of San Francisco. We had a tour guide who told us about the nice architecture of the late 1800’s, with its Victorian houses and the modern buildings such as the Trans America Tower, the highest building in San Francisco. We learned about the history of this beautiful city and the influence of the gold rush, the gay movement and the hippy scene.  After this tour we went to Chinatown to find some cheap shopping (because we guys are wondering why the girls credit cards are still working….). Ron, one of our awesome tour leaders, brought a few of us into a little side street and showed us the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory where a family, mum, dad, grandma/pa and daughter are working together and produce the lucky cookies which everyone eats in a Chinese restaurant. During our little trip in Chinatown we could buy a lot of stuff cheaper than we expected.  We had our dinner in a great and traditional Chinese Restaurant where everyone tried to eat with chopsticks. Our talent with the chopsticks from the perfect handling of our Asian exchange students to our beginners from other countries, brought the food to our mouths or the our feed. After the delicious dinner we went back to our hotel to enjoy the rest of our day in the whirlpool or in chillaxing in our rooms.
